The designation neurosyphilis refers to the tertiary stage of aquired syphilis [syphilis - acquired] when the nervous system is predominantly affected. During this phase of the infection caused by Treponema pallidum the optic nerve is affected. A granulomatous optic neuritis may develop and optic atrophy is common in tabes dorsalis. An Argyll-Robertson is a feature of neurosyphilis.
