Macular degeneration (age-related macular degeneration, senile macular degeneration, disciform macular degeneration, age-related maculopathy, AMD, ARMD) is a very common cause of blindness in the  in patients > 50 years old in the United States and many other developed countries. Two types of this maculopathy are recognized: age-related macular degeneration - dry type and  age-related macular degeneration - wet type.
