Carcinoma of the conjunctiva is one of the numerous malignant neoplasms of the ocular mucous membrane. It may be preceded by a premalignant lesion (dysplasia, intraepithelial neoplasm). Special variants of the conjunctival carcinoma include squamous cell carcinoma [squamous carcinoma - conjunctiva], pigmented squamous cell carcinoma, spindle cell carcinoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma [mucoepidermoid carcinoma - conjunctiva]). A carcinoma of the orbit or eyelid may extend to the conjunctiva.
