Glomerulonephritis is an inflammatory disorder of the renal glomeruli. It is a manifestation of type III hypersensitivity [hypersensitivity - type III]. Several types of glomerulonephritis are recognized (acute postinfectious glomerulonephritis [glomerulonephritis - acute postinfectious], type I membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis [glomerulonephritis - membranoproliferative type I], type II membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis [glomerulonephritis - membranoproliferative type II], and lupus glomerulonephritis [glomerulonephritis - lupus]). A progressive hematuric glomerulonephritis typified by glomerular basement membrane abnormalities occurs in Alport syndrome.
