The term arteriosclerosis refers to a thickening and hardening of the arterial wall. The designation includes arteriolosclerosis, hypertensive arteriolosclerosis, atherosclerosis, and Mönckeberg arteriosclerosis. Arteriosclerosis is of little clinical significance as it is not accompanied by a narrowing of the vascular lumen. If the latter occurs it can result in occlusovascular disease.
